This is the promised post on the "King of Fruit - the mighty Durian"! Many of you may not have heard about this fruit before. It's reputation is "smells like hell but tastes like heaven". Most Malaysians will disagree to that and will say instead "smells like heaven AND tastes like heaven". It is also sometimes called the 'forbidden' fruit because hotels in Malaysia will often post notices in their lobby and lifts that durians are not allowed on their property. The smell of durian is very very strong. We had one durian in our car for about 10 minutes when we were in Ipoh and it took us a whole day to air out the smell! We had to do that because our girls find the smell nauseating :-)
Durian has a really tough outer shell with hard and sharp thorns. The thorns can actually puncture your skin if you are not careful. Because of this hard and thorny shell, openning a durian is a skill in itself!
If want you to read more about Durian, I am sure you can google it but nothing you read will do justice to its heavenly smell and taste - you really have to smell it and eat it to believe it!
See how sharp and thorny the shell is. The edible part of the fruit is the yellow meaty flesh. Major YUM!!!
Tony enjoying the "fruit of his labor" since he had to work really hard to open it.
This is a picture I found from 2006 when Kathryn took up the challenge to eat one seed of durian for the reward price of RM50 (about USD$15). It was like the tv series, Fear Factor. She cried throughout the process but still managed to finish the fruit and got the money:-) This year, neither girls were even tempted by the same offer we gave them!

This is the famous salt baked chicken of Ipoh. The chicken is wrapped in greaseproof paper, and then baked in salt. This is just one of the many super delicious food we were able to enjoy in Ipoh - thanks to the wonderful hospitality of the pastors and their members!
Kathryn using chopsticks at a dim sum restuarant. She seems pretty good at it too, doesn't she? The lady on her left is Pas Christie from Emmanuel Assembly.
This is a random picture I found. This is what the girls do when we visit with friends over lunch/dinner at a nearby mall. They park themselves in Borders (a really nice bookstore) and read and read and read and......they love it!
More pictures from our food fest at Shogun - raw salmon rolls...

this is the adult pool at our hotel. It is on the 7th floor, overlooking Gurney drive. You can click on any of the photos to have a better look.
We found a 70% off sale in Penang at one of the girls favorite clothing store - as you can tell, she's only "mildly" excited, LOL!
